likoma-island-e1416232404199 "The island's main draw card is an abundance of pristine beaches and the activities revolving around them, but there's a healthy dose of other activities, both cultural and physical, to fill several days here."

This is how Lonely Planet describes the beautiful Likoma Island nestled on Lake Malawi.

They are right; the island surprises its visitors not only with its water-activities from scuba diving to kayaking, but also with the cultural interests from local dancing groups to markets.

Kaya Mawa has the only known Kite surfing centre on Lake Malawi, and a frequent breeze on the lake means that there is always an opportunity to hit the waves. Sailing, kayaking and waterskiing are also popular activities amongst the visitors of the luxury lodge.

Away from the shore lies over 100-years-old St. Peter's Cathedral, a must-see attraction. A great way to explore what this exquisite island has to offer is by foot or mountain bike.

Guests of Tongole Wilderness Lodge have been lucky to see Water Buck, Reed Buck and Bush Buck on early morning walks and canoe rides. They’ve also as witnessed a spectacular array of bird life including Red Throated Twinspots, Swallow Tailed Bee Eaters and African Harrier Hawk. Elephants are fairly regular guests at Tongole and come down to drink at the river often. Tongole’s guests have recently spotted two herds with young elephants under 1 month old, which is brilliant!

Guests have also enjoyed sundowners at Katope and Muta Falls where they have been able to see beautiful sunsets. Sunsets at this time of the year are made more beautiful by the dust in the air and show a splendid display of slow changing colours of all shades.

We are proud to announce that a new record time for climbing Kasukusuku Mountain was set by Mr. Brian Bedford and Mr. Mark Roxburgh along with our guides Emmanuel ’007′ Kandeiro and Daniel ‘Timothy’ Samson. They set a record breaking time of 1hr 15mins. Congratulations to them!
